The flimsy, cheap, ugly stock that cannot be replaced is the main thing that keeps me away from the American. Also consider the barrel twist rate. The '06 is a big case and eats a lot of powder. Powder costs per load of 168gr range from $0.18 to $0.35 per shot. 223 loads are about half of this. I settled on Savage - mostly for the price and reputation for accuracy. It was an Axis II XP in .223 Rem: came with the Savage Accutrigger and a fair 3-9X40 Weaver scope. $314 delivered to my LGS, plus $20 transfer fee. Came with a synthetic stock. My only recommendation would be to go for their hardwood stock now available (wasn't when I got it).
