I would recommend Hwy 58 over Tehachapi rather than I-5 over the Ridge Route any day! Tehachapi has 14 miles of 5-6% grades and the Ridge Route has many more miles and grades as steep as 7%. Both go up and down along the way. I have driven to Palm Springs many times and have traveled both ways.
