Depending on your area you might try "dog tuff" grass. It is only sold in plugs. You can't seed it and isn't available in sod. Works great in Colorado. Reviews online seem to point to it not being great in the south. I just planted it in my back yard and the dogs haven't killed it yet. Before finding this grass I was looking at artificial grass.
