Legalism is a subtle tool of Satan, because on the surface it seems to promote holiness. But it’s based on the flesh; it leads people away from vital dependence on Christ into a system of pride and judging others which destroys the church. I want to make three observations stemming from our text to help you understand legalism:This, in turn, raises questions about the roles that law and legalism play in human societies. Rather than simply identifying law with all the social norms that govern behaviour, this approach identifies legalistic forms that are not wholly practical, leading to new questions about who created such texts and for what purposes.
