If you upgrade a talisman/chime it ups the scaling in faith and/or int and the spell buff is directly related to scaling in these two stats. It also gives a buff of around 2/3 in the spell buff with each upgrade level. Spell buff is how much damage or healing the spell/pyromancy/miracle will complete in its duration.A lot of people like to think there are straight upgrades, but the only chime that is just "Better" in every way than the standard one requires 50 faith, and is an endgame item.
