I've mades fences before and I always placed concrete around a pressure treated post (4x4, 6x6, etc). ... with both 4x4 and 6x6 posts with 6x6 being the most common over the last 3 to 4 years that I built fences.I can show you fences that I built 30 years ago and they are still showing no signs of rot in the posts I have ...put 1/3 of the post in the ground (also cited in the other answer here) a 4x6 or 6x6 will look better. 4x4s are more likely to warp and twist over time. 6x6 or 4x6 is a heavier looking post and most people find it looks better. a 4x6 or 6x6 gives you more meat to work with.
