In a very crowded sector, it seems to have carved out a niche to set itself apart from rivals.The powertrain, too, is suited to low-rpm torque in quick bursts. The XC40’s sole gas powertrain is a 2.0-liter, direct-injected turbocharged four-cylinder packing 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s a punchy little powerplant with a workaday personality, happier below about 3400 rpm than anywhere else in the rev range.

Refinement and noise levels. Refinement is generally very good with the Volvo XC40. It cruises quietly, with wind noise kept well at bay and road noise dampened down. There’s more tyre roar on versions with the largest alloy wheels, but that’s inevitable – as is the busier ride quality around town.
